On an otherwise reasonable evening, more than 1,000 people packed an auditorium in Boulder, Colorado, for the culmination of the 2011 Unreasonable Institute. They came to see 27 ventures  present their solutions to some of the world’s greatest challenges.

Tricia Compas, Founder and CEO of DayOne Response, shares how her venture is providing a solution that empowers people to treat their own water and save their own lives.

Six years ago, following the SE Asian Tsunami, 140,000 people were killed. Of those 85,000 died of waterborne diseases. DayOne Response, Inc. has developed a solution to this problem. The DayOne WaterbagTM, a personal water treatment device that provides collection, treatment, transport and storage all in one unit. The Waterbags are compact and can be shipped on a massive scale, providing 26x more water compared to conventional solutions. While working on the ground in Haiti this past year, we supplied families of 4 with 10 days of clean drinking water. On DayOne, we want to treat water in order to save lives.
