Mouhsine and Prakti Design attended the 2012 Unreasonable Institute. If you want to read more and connect with him click here to see his Unreasonable Profile.

Mouhsine Serrar: Mouhsine is a mechanical engineer from Morocco. Previously, he worked in product design as a senior engineer and consultant for multinational technology companies including Motorola, Pitney Bowes, BMW, Intel, Boeing, and others for more than 10 years. Since then, he discovered a new industry that he enjoys very much: designing clean-burning, fuel-efficient cookstoves for developing countries.

Poor people don’t need cheap things, they already have too many cheap things. They need value.

Over seven years of consulting for improved cookstove programs, Mouhsine witnessed the need for the integration of cookstove design, manufacturing, and distribution. Mouhsine envisioned a social enterprise that would bring together best-in-class engineering, production technology, and distribution in order to create the first sustainable and scalable stove dissemination.
Three years ago, he founded Prakti Design Lab, a social enterprise located in Pondicherry, India. Today, there are over 250,000 people in India, Nepal, and Haiti benefiting from clean-burning, fuel-efficient cookstoves made by Prakti. Prakti received several awards, including a nomination at the “Clinton Global Initiative”, and a prize at the “Global Social Venture Challenge”.

Prakti Design: Prakti designs, manufactures, and distributes clean and efficient cookstoves. Every person on this planet needs to cook his/her food. Unfortunately, half of the world’s population relies on biomass fuel and inefficient and smoky traditional stoves. This is a global environmental, social, and health burden. Clean and efficient cookstoves are one of the largest markets on the planet. It is also one of the hardest markets to crack. A successful stove enterprise must invest and innovate on stove design and production, and just as challenging, on effective stove marketing and distribution. After working full time on stoves for 8 years in 15 countries, Prakti has the key to be the first enterprise to unlock the global stove market.

Prakti cookstoves are 50-80% more fuel efficient & create 80% less smoke

Prakti’s Portfolio: best charcoal stove for Africa/South Asia/Haiti, the best chimney stove in Nepal/Himalaya region, best double burner stove in India, and best institutional stoves in Africa and Haiti. There are now 250,000 people in the world relying on Prakti stoves to cook their everyday meals. This scale up is mostly thanks to humanitarian sales.
