Entrepreneurs: Let Go of What You Should Do. Do What You Must

Entrepreneurs are modern-day heroes. They make the world a better place. Seem like a bold statement? It is. It is also accurate. The computer you are using right now—created by an entrepreneur. The shoes you tie on to go for a run so you can be healthy enough to kill it in your day—designed and crafted by an entrepreneur.

Nearly all things you use to maximize the efficiency and experiences of your day are the genius inventions of entrepreneurs. They are considered modern-day heroes because they live true to their inner calls—calls to invent, calls to revolutionize, calls to create and build products that help us to connect, move, eat, share, drive, work, play, and solve big problems.

They make the world a better place by building solutions and services that enrich our lives and make them more exciting, meaningful, easy, and comfortable. They are the creators of invention, not because they feel they should be, but rather because they must.

Entrepreneurs don’t know how to turn off their innovation gene. They can’t help but to discover the undiscovered, to build products from a place of sheer urge, and to activate on their sparks of ingenuity. They are the problem solvers, the thinkers, the trailblazers, and it is their willingness to risk leaving should-centered living behind that makes them heroes.

In our modern experience, shoulds sound like: I should do this job because that is what my father did. I should go to that prestigious school because my parents expect me to—if I don’t, I will disappoint them. I should be making this much money because if I don’t, others will not believe I am successful. I should buy that house, take that trip, and drive that car so my friends and family will be impressed with me.

Shoulds are lies. Entrepreneurs know it and now you do too. The days of should-centered living are over. They only serve to bring us individual and collective suffering, and diminish what is truly possible for all of us. Like it or not, when we begin living from the inside out and not from the outside in, that is the only way we truly do our part in making the world a better place.

Our inner calls to live authentically are no different than the entrepreneurs who offer the world explosive ingenuity. Tweet This Quote

I get to work with aspirational, must-living leaders every day through the work we do at Meriwether Group. We fund, advise, and accelerate highly recognizable, disruptive, and cult-followed consumer brands such a Pendleton, Voodoo Doughnut, Oregon Chai, ABC Home, adidas, Stumptown Coffee, and Dave’s Killer Bread.

The founders of these thriving companies aren’t living from a place of should. They circumvent limiting confines in order to follow their hearts. They listen to their inner voice and heed their calls, and as a result they craft goods and services from a deeply genuine and authentic place. We too must begin living this way if we want more goodness in the world.

Our inner calls to live authentically are no different than the entrepreneurs who offer the world explosive ingenuity. Loud or quiet, the calls within us to give more, be more, and live more purposefully are ringing. These calls are nudging us to heed what inspires us, to do those things that make us feel alive. They are not pushing us to live in order to prove something. Our inner calls do not lead us to exist in order to satisfy someone else’s expectations of us. They call to guide us through our own heroic journey, whatever that means for each of us.

It’s time we become modern-day heroes, doing our part to make the world a better place. Not because we should, but for no other reason than we must Tweet This Quote

Just as founders heed the call to pour passion into their products and brands, we can, and must pour passion into the work we do. They merge intellect and intuition, and we can too. They understand their consumer on the most intimate level, and are compassionate about their needs. We must come to understand our communities better, and begin living more compassionately.

They are in service to humanity by gifting the consumer something they can identify with, feel connected to, and by crafting products that satisfy a need or desire. We must be of service by sharing our gifts, our talents, and by showing up every day living from our hearts.

Like entrepreneurs, we are being called all the time. Called to innovate, to revolutionize, and to craft our lives with meaning and purpose. It’s time we answer these calls. It’s time we become modern-day heroes, doing our part to make the world a better place. Not because we should, but for no other reason than we must.
