Four Years and $3 Million Later, This Company is Fueling Uganda

In Uganda, 9 in 10 people rely on wood to cook their food and heat their homes. Not only do women and girls often travel long distances to gather the wood from largely depleted forests, they also disproportionately suffer health problems from inhaling the smoky air pollution caused by the burning wood.

When Moses Sanga returned home to his village one day and saw his younger sister missing school to carry a huge pile of wood, he decided to quit his banking job. Soon after, he founded Eco-Fuel Africa—a company dedicated to turning locally sourced biomass waste into green charcoal.

This video premiere of The Unreasonable Ones: Moses Sanga, shot by Unreasonable Media on location in Uganda this past summer, tells the story of Sanga from Unreasonable Institute 2011 fellow to founder and CEO of a thriving business. At the institute, he developed the business model for his life-changing product, rallied mentors and financial resources to support his mission, and grew Eco-Fuel Africa to the profitable company it is today—with 36 full-time employees and $3 million in funding.
