Launching more programs in more countries was an end in the sense that we wanted to accelerate more entrepreneurs around the world. Scaling was imperative to achieve our mission; just working with a small handful of entrepreneurs every year was not enough. But scaling was also a means in that we would learn how to scale\u2014by scaling. Running similar experiments (Labs) in countries all over the world would increase our rate of learning, and we would eventually figure out how to do it really well (we\u2019re still figuring it out, but we\u2019re miles further along than we were 12 months ago).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"right\"><p>Strategy is best done inductively, when it grows organically out of what the market tells us.<span id=\"tweetquote\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=http:\/\/bit.ly\/1LceE29&amp;via=unreasonable&amp;text=&quot;Strategy is best done inductively, when it grows from what the market says&quot; @BanksBenitez\"><i class=\"fa fa-twitter\"><\/i> Tweet This Quote<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We were intentionally skeptical about developing a bold strategy before we eased our way into it. We believe strategy is best when done inductively, meaning when it grows organically out of what the market tells us. Unreasonable Institute board member and rapid prototyping expert, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=d5_h1VuwD6g\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Chi<\/a>, says something similar when it comes to strategy: \u201cIt&#8217;s quite difficult to do [strategy] outside of an experimental context that challenges\/validates and constantly evolves and improves what constitutes the strategy.\u201d And that\u2019s basically what we did last year: created an experimental context that is slowly molding into a strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Our strategy in 2015 was something pretty unsophisticated like: <em>Launch 12 Unreasonable Labs around the world and see how they go. Then figure out what comes next.<\/em> After a 2015 full of learning, recognizing patterns, and identifying bright and dark spots, our forward-looking strategy is emerging out of the following key observations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Unreasonable Labs are testing grounds to evaluate market readiness for a longer program.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.endeavor.org\/team\/walt-mayo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Walt Mayo<\/a>, Senior Vice President of Global Expansion at <a href=\"http:\/\/endeavor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Endeavor<\/a>, says that market readiness\/receptivity is the most important factor in the success of a new Endeavor office. We agree. Because Labs are only 5-day programs, they can serve as an important bellwether of market readiness. Running a Lab tells us a lot: what is the entrepreneurial ecosystem like? Are there enough entrepreneurs, mentors, investors, partners, etc.? Is the market untapped or saturated with accelerators? Most importantly, is the team we\u2019re partnering with the right team to run more Unreasonable programs in the future?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Labs can have a catalytic impact in untapped, emerging markets.<\/strong> In recent years, the number of accelerators has proliferated, but not evenly around the world. In our first year running Labs, we discovered untapped but emerging markets where there was a dearth of support services for entrepreneurs. Places like Morocco, Ghana and Brazil were large markets in the early days of an entrepreneurial renaissance, but they lacked support programs (like a Lab or an Institute) for impact entrepreneurs. Unreasonable Labs could meet a need there and serve as a foundational part of the nascent ecosystem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"center\"><p>Plenty of places around the world are in the early stages of an entrepreneurial renaissance, but they lack support.<span id=\"tweetquote\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=http:\/\/bit.ly\/1LceE29&amp;via=unreasonable&amp;text=&quot;Places globally in early stages of entrepreneurial renaissance, but lack support&quot; @BanksBenitez\"><i class=\"fa fa-twitter\"><\/i> Tweet This Quote<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Short-term Labs are converting into long-term programs.<\/strong> A critic might say, \u201cLabs are only 5-days. That\u2019s not enough to truly accelerate an entrepreneur. They need long-term support.\u201d We agree. Labs are an incomplete solution; we\u2019re in the business of establishing long-term, self-sustaining ecosystems of support for entrepreneurs, so one of the hypotheses we are testing is: <em>Labs will transform into long-term programs<\/em>. This is happening, although more slowly than we thought. In a few of our 2015 locations like Japan, Morocco and Ecuador, teams will be running 1-2 more Labs this year. In Boston, we\u2019re partnering with the CityAwake team to run a long-term program composed of 4-6 Labs spread out over 9 months. This program will support Boston-based entrepreneurs throughout the early life-cycle of their businesses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Labs can be satellite programs that feed into regional Institutes.<\/strong> In 2016, we are excited to partner with the Unreasonable East Africa team to launch 2-3 Labs in East Africa. These Labs won\u2019t turn into long-term programs because Unreasonable East Africa already exists in the region. But the East Africa Labs will serve as critical, earlier-stage programs that identify entrepreneurs who can funnel into Unreasonable East Africa. In the future, this might be a model for scale: a regional Institute surrounded by a network of Labs that identify and then feed the top entrepreneurs into that full-scale Institute. Then, get labs to convert to (and\/or feed into) regional institutes<\/em>. Perhaps in the future, we will host global acceleration programs for the best and brightest entrepreneurs who come out of Labs. But let\u2019s not get too far ahead of ourselves just yet =).<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll be supporting another cohort of 10-14 Labs that will run in fall 2016.
