Cesar Harada is an French-Japanese Inventor, Environmentalist and Entrepreneur. Currently developing the Protei <\/a>\u2013 a revolutionary shape shifting sailing robot- with the Open-H2O community<\/a>, TED Senior Fellow<\/a>, Unreasonable at sea Entrepreneur<\/a>, Figure of progress (by GOOD and IBM)<\/a>, PhD candidate at Goldsmiths University of London<\/a>, writing on \u201cOpen Hardware for the Environment\u201d<\/a> with a strong focus on ocean communities & technologies. Cesar also teaches Masters of \u201cDesign and Environment\u201d<\/a> at Goldsmiths University.<\/em><\/p>\n

Aloha Hilo<\/h3>\n

\nThe beauty and luxurious landscape of Hawaii big island welcomed us after a few days at sea.
\nI realised I became slightly anxious to come on land as the ship became our new home.
\nI adapted quickly to the motion of the ship and felt strongly\u00a0land-sick<\/a>\u00a0for the first few hours in Hawaii.<\/p>\n

Design Thinking workshop at Hilo University<\/h3>\n

We had a fruitful Design Thinking session in\u00a0Hilo University<\/a>\u00a0with big Island locals. We brainstormed with another company\u00a0Evolving Technologies<\/a>\u00a0building low cost endoscopes. Many new creative uses of Protei, based on discussion came up. Asymmetrical\u00a0hulls have been in use for a very long time in Hawaii, some early designs of Protei have been drawing inspiration directly from Hawaiians traditional boats. Another interesting information was that local schools organise every year a robotic competition, so we naturally thought building plastic collecting robots would be a smart challenge to submit and perhaps support with the Protei team.<\/p>\n

Meeting with Hank Carson, Anna Cummins & Markus Erikson<\/h3>\n

We had a great conversation with\u00a0Dr Hank Carson<\/a>, that explained us a little bit about his research. He showed us samples of what can be found on the beach, and the message is : \u201cdon\u2019t buy plastic toys anymore, they are freely available at Kamilo Beach\u201d \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

We also played with these very cool\u00a0red blocks<\/a>\u00a0that has been used to study the currents around the island.<\/p>\n

We were also incredibly lucky to meet 2 other legends of the plastic gyre :\u00a0Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins<\/a>.
\nThey told us about a very recent paper they published about the\u00a0South Atlantic plastic gyre<\/a>. You can buy the publication\u00a0here.<\/a><\/p>\n

Together with Levine, Carson, and Eriksen we had a detailled discussion of how plastic\u00a0measurements\u00a0could be improved both with new trawler designs and swarms of sailing robots such as Protei. Carson evoked an\u00a0optical plankton counting<\/a>\u00a0so Protei could collect data instead of\u00a0physical\u00a0samples. Eriksen talked about his high-speed\u00a0trawling devices<\/a>\u00a0and was very inspirational for us. Carson Suggested that if Protei was capable of carrying multiple instruments, useful information would be provided by<\/p>\n
