We are a founding member of the Unreasonable Group and
we live by the values outlined below…
Impact > Everything
All entrepreneurs solve problem-sets and all entrepreneurs have the opportunity to chose which problem-sets they devote themselves to. We only work with companies hellbent on leveraging ingenuity, profits, and the scale of markets, to solve seemingly intractable social and environmental challenges (i.e. the most difficult problem-sets of our time). The desire to create significant impact is baked into their DNA and serves as their “northern-star” for every decision made.
Long Term > Short Term
We, and the companies we work with, are not guided by short term decision making. Together we are guided by a desire to create long term value. We think in terms of generations, not quarterly reports.
Companies notoriously pretend they have all the answers… at Unreasonable, we value vulnerability over perceived confidence. We see strength in vulnerability.
20% Impossible > 100% Possible
We are founded by entrepreneurs and we are dedicated to entrepreneurs. This means we believe in experimenting boldly and we do so with the foresight that we will often times fail. Our friends at Google say they’d rather achieve 60% of the impossible than 100% of the possible… If the experiment is noteworthy, we’d prefer to achieve 20% of the impossible than 100% of the possible.
BIG Thinking & BIG Markets
All of the companies we work with have the long term aspiration of directly impacting at minimum 1 million lives and creating 1 billion dollars in value. We know it sounds foolhardy, but we don’t see a reason to settle for anything less.
The Art of Gyshido
Gyshido = “Get Shit Done.” Don’t talk about it, build it… it’s that simple.
Unreasonable companies have an unchecked aspiration to have a positive dent on history. They set out to disrupt our current conceptions of what is possible and strive to shift the status quo.
Magic is in the Details
Design matters, the details matter, personality matters, and intentionality is critical. We are tired of hearing that the devil is in the details; instead, we believe the magic is in the details. When paid attention to, and when we care about the pixel as much as we do the page, we have a belief that our customers and the customers of our portfolio companies will appreciate us more over time.
We > i
We believe in pathological collaboration. We strive to turn competitors into partners and stand on a belief that the world’s greatest challenges will never be solved by one person, one team, or one company. We must work together to move far and to move fast.* This is why you’ll see 100+ partners on our partners page.
Empathy is King
We have a deep desire to listen and believe that the best go-to-market strategy is to simply go to market (i.e. be with your customers). We believe in listening and learning from our customers and we strive to work with founding teams who are their own customers.
Always Ask “WWMD?”
Ask yourself “What Would MacGyver Do?” MacGyver would leverage creativity and the resources at-hand instead of looking elsewhere for the answers. Instead of raising venture capital too soon or giving up on a difficult problem because the solution isn’t easily identified, we believe in the importance of maximizing partnerships, realizing the potential of your current team, running a lean operation, and in short, doing as MacGyver would do.
Never forget to dance and to celebrate the small wins. When we are working this hard, it’s too easy to forget to have fun, cut loose, and celebrate the small wins. Don’t wait for IPO to pop the champagne. Be playful, understand we are all human, and have a sense of humor with what you do.
*we can’t thank our friends at Skillshare enough for the inspiration behind the value of “we > i”
