Creating edible cutlery to help prevent 5 million tons of plastic from entering landfills.
It is estimated that 40 billion plastic utensils are used and thrown away each year in the United States alone. Bakey's has developed edible cutlery to provide an effective alternative to plastic, disposable cutlery for a targeted customer base of 1 billion. Petroleum-based plastic contains toxic chemicals that leach into food and the environment when thrown away. Bakey's cutlery, made from sorghum flour blended with rice and wheat, provides an alternative that is healthy both for humans and the environment. They contain no chemicals, preservatives, fat, emulsifiers, artificial coloring, or milk products and are 100 percent vegan. Now, instead of throwing away cutlery after a single use, people can choose to consume their utensil, or it will biodegrade in less than three days. Bakey's spoons come in sweet and savory varieties, and they will soon be expanding their product line with forks, chopsticks, and salad bowls.
