Unreasonable Mentors
Derrell Jackson
Dedicated leader, strategist, team developer, expert communicator
Derrell is an Unreasonable Mentor. Derrell was part of Project Literacy Lab 2017, and has advised over 13 Unreasonable companies.
I'm an experienced leader establishing strategy and implementing sales, marketing and product development initiatives for non-profit, small business and a multi-million dollar business within a large corporation.
I have a strong belief that a profitable, sustainable business must focus on three key areas: customer, employee and social impact. True understanding of your customer's challenges comes from constant market analysis and real-time immersion into their business. My work in leading research programs has taught me how to listen to and observe the customer in order to develop solutions that meet both their seen and unforeseen needs.
Leading a team to exceed both financial goals and strategic objectives takes a keen ability to help people understand how their talents and personal career aspirations fit within the overall corporate vision. Every highly talented member of my team is promised three things from me: (1) direction on how their work contributes to advancing the overall vision/strategy, (2) a supportive environment for sharing new ideas and leveraging their unique talents and (3) a commitment to removing obstacles that impede them from doing their best work.
Whether it be environmental initiatives that save on energy costs while protecting natural resources or sourcing from institutions providing safe labor conditions, business must balance its focus on meeting the customer's needs with ensuring we enrich the communities in which those customers and its employees live. From my work in co-founding a small direct trade coffee business to leading the environment arm of a corporate giving board, I've learned how best to leverage resources in ways that lead to positive financial and social returns for the enterprise and community as a whole.
