James Rhodes is the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Magnuss, a maritime technology firm. Magnuss develops onboard systems that reduce fuel consumption and emissions for global shipping. Mr. Rhodes brings over 30 years of experience in maritime shipping, renewable energy, project development, investment banking and management consulting. He is responsible for managing the overall operations and resources of the firm, including strategy, corporate development, finance, customer engagement and investor relations. A veteran executive and maritime entrepreneur, Mr. Rhodes draws on an extensive network spanning academia, shipbuilding and naval architecture. A frequent speaker at industry events, he is the co-inventor of the Magnuss VOSS™ (Vertically-variable Ocean Sail System) and has authored numerous articles on sustainable energy, shipping technology and the global carbon markets.
Prior to establishing Magnuss in 2011, Mr. Rhodes was Founder of Eco Capital, an energy advisory firm. Among assignments in renewable energy and carbon finance, Mr. Rhodes advised General Electric and AES Corporation on its US carbon business, which made investments in renewable energy and emissions reduction projects. In 2008, he was appointed Chief Operating Officer of GE/AES GHG Services, a joint venture between GE and AES, and served as a member of its Executive Management and Investment Committees. He led strategy, investments, M&A, business development, project development, and carbon asset management.
Before founding Eco Capital in 2007, Mr. Rhodes was Managing Director of Morgan Stanley. Within the power and energy sectors, he served organizations in twelve years with the firm ranging from emerging growth companies to Fortune 100 corporations and completed over 150 advisory assignments. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Mr. Rhodes spent a decade in investment banking at Goldman Sachs and in management consulting at Booz Allen. He holds an M.B.A. with distinction from Columbia Business School and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Brown University.
