John is an Unreasonable Mentor. John was part of Shell StartUp Engine UK 2021, and has advised over 9 Unreasonable companies.
John MacArthur is Director of Highland Sustainability Limited which advises and inspires change makers to discover new ways to bring people, planet, and prosperity together in harmony. He is Senior Advisor Industry Pathways for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. WBCSD is the premier global, CEO-led community of over 200 of the world’s leading sustainable businesses working to accelerate the system transformations needed for a net-zero, nature positive, more equitable future. John also volunteers his time as Visiting Professor in Practice of Net Zero Energy Transition at Imperial College, assisting with its Net Zero Lab.
Previously, he was the first ever Group Climate Change Officer at ADNOC in the UAE, one of the world’s leading energy producers, resulting in climate action investments of $15 billion. Prior to this, John worked for Shell for more than two decades internationally. Most recently, he led Shell’s ‘Net Zero’ climate ambition, strategy, and implementation as its first Chief Carbon Engineer. He led Shell’s two R&D centres in The Netherlands, including Gas, Materials and CCUS technology platforms. John was founding chair of OGCI Climate Investments, a billion-dollar energy transition venture fund, investing in circular carbon ventures and projects. 
John holds an MEng Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College, a Masters in Sustainability Leadership from University of Cambridge, and a Masters in Coaching and Behavioural Change from Henley Business School. John is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Energy Institute, and a Chartered Petroleum Engineer, all awarded in the UK. He also serves as chair of International Energy Week.
