Developing carbon-neutral Portland cement
Headquarters Oakland, California, United States
Founded in 2019, Brimstone is a developer of a novel process that produces cement without carbon emissions while maintaining cost competitiveness with traditional cement.
The world produces over 4 billion tons of cement annually—a number only expected to grow. The problem is that cement production accounts for 7.5% of global CO2 emissions, with a total climate impact just behind cars. Brimstone has developed a breakthrough carbon-negative process to produce the same ordinary Portland cement and supplementary cementitious materials used today. These materials have the same quality and performance builders have trusted for over 150 years — now with a positive climate impact. Brimstone's investors include Breakthrough Energy Ventures, DCVC, Collab Fund, Amazon Climate Pledge, and Fifth Wall.
- Developed the world's first process to make industry-standard portland cement without process emissions as certified by a third party and covered in the Washington Post.
- Raised a $55M Series A from leading climate investors, including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, DCVC, Collaborative Fund, Fifth Wall, S2G Ventures, Amazon Climate Pledge, Acceler8, Gatemore, Impact Science Ventures, Osage University Partners, and SystemIQ.
- Solution has been recognized by the International Energy Agency, the Washington Post, CNBC, CBS, and honored as one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2023.
