Unreasonable Fellows
David Kim
Founder & CEO at CyanoCapture
David is an Unreasonable Fellow. David was part of Unreasonable Impact UK & Europe 2025.
As a medical student, David started quietly working on an idea in his spare time, that would later become CyanoCapture. Four years later, the biotech startup became the first in the world to successfully genetically programme the world's fastest photosynthetic microbe to synthesise human insulin.
David commissioned at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as a reservist Army Officer in the Parachute Regiment, before entering regular service as a resident doctor in the British Army for a year. He has also served with Christian medical organisations in the Democratic Republic of Congo to improve operational efficiency in low-resource health systems using simple interventions.
David emigrated to the UK and grew up in South London. He was one of the youngest ever to obtain the top grade in Maths GCSE, aged 11, and was awarded a scholarship to a boarding school. He has broad scientific interests, having co-authored 10+ papers and patents in a range of topics from Vaccine Immunology to the thermodynamics of cyanobacterial CO2 fixation. David enjoys the outdoors and reading books on theology in his spare time.
